Ben Kumwenda

Professional Bio

Ben is a Lecturer in Medical Education. He graduated from St Andrews University (MRes) and first joined the University of Dundee, School of Medicine in 2009 where he worked as a Research Administrator within the undergraduate medicine team. He was involved in coordinating different research studies, managing medical school admissions data, as well as coordinating the electives programme. It is from there that Ben’s interest in medical education took off. Later he moved to Aberdeen University where he completed a PhD in Medical Education at the Centre for Healthcare Education Research and Innovation (CHERI). His research used the UK Medical Education Database (UKMED) to examine the career progression of doctors from widening access backgrounds. He is one of the first researchers to publish using the UKMED. Ben re-joined the University of Dundee, Centre for Medical Education in 2019. He is the deputy lead for several modules on Master’s in Medical Education and supports postgraduate students with dissertations. Research Ben’s current research focuses on the use of administrative and secondary data analyses to answer complex questions on student selection, assessment, widening participation, and workforce planning. He supervises PhD students and welcomes further applications from students interested in medical education.
