Paul McGurgan
Assoc Dean (Student Matters) - UWA Medical School
Professional Bio
After graduating from Trinity College Dublin in 1995, Paul wanted less sleep and more adrenalin in his life.... although he later found out that starting a family could have achieved the same result, he decided to become an obstetrician and gynaecologist. His career has given him the opportunity to work in 3 different countries' health care systems- Ireland, UK and Australia. As an associate professor in UWA he coordinates the medical student professional development and mentoring programs. Paul has a special interest in patient safety and medical professionalism and is currently completing a PhD on 'What factors influence medical students' professional opinions?'. His work in this and other areas of his life reflect his imposter syndrome; Paul is concerned and suffers anxiety that people will think he is an imposter in medical academia without some ground breaking research in these areas. He looks around at other colleagues, junior doctors and students and observes their skills and intellectual gifts. This further exacerbates his existential dilemma of how ‘the system’ even let him get into medical school. Paul continues to search for answers and in the meantime hopes that he can fake it until he makes it.
