Professional Bio
Su Somay is a senior measurement scientist in the Office of Research Strategy at NBME. Her primary responsibilities include designing, leading and contributing to innovative projects aimed at advancing the fields of psychometrics and medical education. Her primary research interests focus on performance-based assessments, as well as development and implementation of novel constructs and assessment methods. Su has also done research across diverse areas in psychometrics, including equating, parameter estimation, automated scoring, Bayesian Item Response Theory models and validity. The main goal of her research in medical education is to enhance the assessment of non-cognitive abilities, with specific emphasis on clinical reasoning and health systems science. She received her doctorate in psychometrics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2007. Su also holds a master’s in social psychology from the Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey.
