Professional Bio
Dr Taranikanti joined the Department of Foundational Medical Studies at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, Michigan USA as an Associate Professor in June 2018. Dr Taranikanti received her medical education degree M.D. and Ph.D. from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi where she pursued translational research in breast cancer. She is a recipient of the UICC fellowship in 2002 from JWCI, Santa Monica USA where she worked on the significance of biological markers in node-negative breast cancer. She was also an ICRETT fellow and worked on lymph angiogenesis in breast cancer at Cardiff University UK. She teaches all disciplines of anatomical sciences to M1/M2 students. She is presently the reproductive systems course director and the systems director for integrating anatomy with clinical sciences where she served as the liaison between clinical faculty and FMS faculty for vertical integration across all the organ-system courses. Dr Taranikanti has a deep passion for medical education and her expertise is in integration in medical education. Her experience in both clinical and basic sciences education helped develop novel teaching and assessment strategies in the integrated curriculum such as case-based learning, team-based assessments in labs, self-directed learning, and various teaching resources for the preclinical medical curriculum. Dr Taranikanti has over 20 years of teaching experience in various medical schools across the world (India, the Middle East, and the US) where she taught medical students, supervised cadaveric dissections, designed skills sessions relevant to case presentations, adopted simulation-based learning into these sessions. She also imparted anatomical knowledge to residents during surgical ward rounds and conducted integrated workshops to bring clinical relevance to anatomy learning. In the middle east, she helped develop, deliver, and implement the integrated curriculum where novel teaching strategies were adopted. She also has experience in different curricula(Block, traditional, System-based, and Integrated Curricula) where she developed, and designed novel teaching methods, various assessment methods, standard-setting procedures, item analysis, and academic progress of students. During her career as an anatomist, she has developed teaching resources using plastination techniques, electron microscopy, and embryology models. Her basic science research work is on cell cycle regulation and the role of endoplasmic stress response in breast and colon cancer patients. Dr Taranikanti has established herself as a medical educator both nationally and internationally and has conducted workshops globally and invited talks on education in NUS Singapore, Srilanka, the Middle East, and the USA on medical education research. She has published in leading medical education journals as well as a reviewer for anatomy education journals. Medical Education Awards and Honors 1.
